Day 4: 5 Dec 2026 Sat: Indigenous Pingtung: Sandimen & Wutai B/L/D
08:00 breakfast. Pack a light jacket — Wutai sits above 1,000 metres and is cooler than the coast.
09:00 Private coach northeast to Sandimen Township, Pingtung County, heartland of the Paiwan people (~1 hour). First stop: the Taiwan Indigenous Culture Park in Majia — 82 hectares of traditional village reconstructions, dance performances, and craft demonstrations across Paiwan and Rukai cultures. The park has shuttle buses between zones, so walking is manageable.
11:30 Continue deeper into the mountains to Wutai Township, home of the Rukai tribe (~30 minutes from Sandimen). The road climbs through cloud forest; the slate-built villages appear suddenly against the green. Walk the Rock Slab Alley— narrow lanes paved in local slate, lined with Rukai carvings and pottery-jar markers telling clan stories.
12:30 Lunch at the Shenshan Tribal Cooking School. This is the highlight: a farm-to-table experience where the group hand-picks ingredients — taro leaves, foxtail millet, mountain greens — then cooks traditional Rukai dishes under instruction from local women. Expect to make cinavu (meat and taro wrapped in leaves and steamed) and abai (millet cake).
15:30 Visit the Shenshan Church and Timur Park (Dimoer Park) before descending.
17:00 Coach back to Kaohsiung (~1.5 hours).
19:00 Light dinner near the hotel — after a big cooking lunch, something simple.

08:30–11:00 Drive south along the coast toward Kenting National Park (~2.5 hours). The landscape shifts from port city to tropical peninsula — betel nut palms, fishing villages, then open ocean.
11:00 Eluanbi Lighthouse — “The Light of East Asia,” perched on Taiwan’s southernmost cape where the Taiwan Strait, Bashi Channel, and Pacific Ocean meet. Flat, paved paths.
11:45 Southernmost Point of Taiwan— a short, well-shaded walking path (about 10 minutes each way) to the marker. Good photo stop.
12:30 Longpan Park — a raised coral plateau with sweeping cliff-top views of the Pacific. No climbing needed; the viewing platforms are right at the roadside. On a clear December day, the blues are electric.
13:00 Lunch in Kenting town — seafood
14:30 Continue east on the South Link Highway (Highway 9). This is the scenic heart of the day: the road hugs the Pacific coast from Dawu through Daren, mountain on one side, open ocean on the other. Stop at one or two designated viewpoints for stretching legs.
17:30 Arrive Taitung Hotel to Check in and unwind.
19:00 Dinner at Tiehua Music Village — an open-air arts space in downtown Taitung with live indigenous music, craft stalls, and food. Gentle evening energy perfect for the group.
